Academic Success Peer Mentoring Program

Learn. Share. Grow.

ASPM Motto

Each Tuesday afternoon from 3:15pm – 5:00pm, Mrs Davies (Leading Learning Coordinator and Head of the English Department) as well as former high achieving NCC students lead an initiative called Academic Success Peer Mentoring Program.

This is a dedicated time during which any student in Years 7-12 can come to the Leading Learning Classroom (S21) and receive guidance and help with their schoolwork. The purpose for this is to improve students’ communication skills, strengthen their learning habits and increase their results in assessments. The initiative began in 2013, funded by Independent Schools Queensland as part of their Teachers as Researchers project. Data produced by this action research has been carefully collected and analysed and has proved that it works.

Students learn from their colleagues who have experienced similar challenges, receiving useful and practical tips, employing user-friendly language, and negotiating solutions and plans. Snacks, colourful and comfortable learning spaces as well as ASPM mentor involvement in the delivery of lessons (in English and Modern History, for example) have also contributed to the success of the program.

Since 2015, 89% of the Year 12 mentors involved in this academic mentoring project obtained very high achievement (VHA) or over 80% in the subjects for which they mentored. In addition, past ASPM prefects and head mentors have achieved QCAA Subject Achievement Commendation Certificates in recognition of having achieved 100% in all Year 12 summative assessments.

Student Testimonials for ASPM

The afternoon peer mentoring provides a highly beneficial learning environment to improve your grades, as the students present are either dedicated to producing higher-level assessment responses or becoming mentally prepared for upcoming exams. Moreover, the senior students are always welcoming and can help you with your assessment and provide invaluable advice.
